HI, IT’S jo:
Nice to Meet You, Queensway
Hi, I’m Josie Baldesarra-Chau, Executive Director at Shop The Queensway BIA. But you can call me Jo.
When I stepped into this role, one of the first things I noticed was how unique The Queensway feels compared to other Toronto neighbourhoods. We don’t have one central public space where everyone naturally crosses paths. Instead, we have a long corridor made up of passionate, resilient, and incredibly diverse business owners who make this place feel like home.
That difference is actually what drew me in.
I’ve always believed local businesses are the heart of a community. They’re the places we return to for the familiar and the places that gradually become part of our everyday rhythm. They’re run by people with families, stories, and ideas that shape the character of a neighbourhood far beyond transactions.
Working with Shop The Queensway BIA has shown me just how much goes on behind every storefront. There are early mornings, long nights, and quiet moments of triumph most people never see. Having the chance to learn those stories and help share them is something I feel genuinely privileged to do.
That is why so much of our work is focused on visibility, storytelling, and building connection. Whether it is through community events, partnerships, or our new docu-series, the goal is always the same. Help our neighbourhood see the people behind the businesses and celebrate what makes this corridor so special.
Local is not just a label. It is someone’s dream, someone’s livelihood, and in many cases, someone’s legacy. If our work can support that and help those dreams grow here on The Queensway, then we are building something meaningful together.
Thanks for reading, and thank you for being part of this community. This is the first of many Hi, it’s Jo articles where I’ll be sharing updates, behind-the-scenes notes, recaps of BIA initiatives, and stories from along the corridor.
If we have not met yet, I really hope we get the chance. I am always excited to connect with more business owners, neighbours, and partners along The Queensway. If you ever want to grab a coffee, show me your shop, or chat through an idea you’re excited about, please reach out any time at info@shopthequeensway.com.
Got a new business opening? Invite me over.
Want to brainstorm something? I’m all ears.
And if we do grab that coffee, I take mine black.
Jo
